The Megger BITE3 battery impedance test equipment analyzes the
condition of lead- battery systems that have a capacity of up
to 2,000 ampere-hours (Ah) for battery maintenance applications
in the industrial, commercial, medical, telecommunications,
aircraft, power utility, and industries. It measures
cell and string parameters to determine overall battery system
, including the battery’s impedance, interconnection
resistance, cell voltage, float current, ripple current, and the
harmonic content of ripple current. The BITE3 allows the battery
system to remain connected during testing, avoiding downtime.
Because the BITE3 does not require battery discharge, there is
less risk of damage to the battery during testing than with load
testing or other forms of testing. The BITE3 runs the Microsoft
Windows CE operating system and has 32 megabytes (MB) of internal
memory for storing test data. A port on the transmitter supports
data transfer to a computer, using the included RS232 data cable.
The BITE3 comes with software that allows recorded data to be
organized and analyzed over time to track trends in test results.
It has a backlit liquid crystal display (LCD) that is readable in
low light. It operates on a rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride
(NiMH) battery pack (battery and AC charger included), and it has
a low-battery indicator that indicates when the battery needs to
be charged. It comes with dual-point Kelvin probe leads for
taking measurements, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the test
leads provide information about the circuit condition and show
whether or not measurements are being taken. The transmitter is
housed in a hard plastic case, and it comes with a canvas
carrying case for transport and storage of the tester and
accessories when not in use.

Battery testers are used in the industrial, commercial, medical,
telecommunications, aircraft, power utility, and
industries to detect the of a battery. They can measure
conductance, impedance, voltage, and current, among other
parameters. Battery testers are designed for specific types of
batteries, such as lead-, nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) and
alkaline batteries. Some testers require a load to be applied to
the battery during testing, and some do not. A variety of test
leads with contacts, probes, clamps, clips, and other connectors
can be used to connect a battery to a tester. Since different
testers can measure different parameters to calculate battery
, it is important to use the same tester for consecutive
tests on a single battery when analyzing changes in battery
over time.
Megger manufactures equipment for cable fault locating,
protective relay testing, telecommunications and data integrity,
and power quality testing under multiple brand names, among them
Megger, Biddle, States, and AVO. The company, founded in 1889, is
headquartered in Dover, England, and meets International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2008 standards.
