About the Startup Describe your product in 3 words.
Simple, Inexpensive Smarthome
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
We've all heard about smarthome, but the pricing and complexity
of what's out there today puts many people off. When I wanted to
set my apartment up I was swept into a sea of apps, standards,
high prices, and different hubs, so you end up with more apps on
your home screen and less money in your wallet. We wanted to
create something simple and inexpensive that would work with the
same app, so you wouldn't have to switch back and forth to
control your cameras, lights, and plugs. We tried to solve the
high cost per device and the complexity and tie-in of separate
ecosystems/hubs, each with its own app.
What makes your product special?
It's the balance of everything: Simplicity, value driven price
points, integration with Google Home and Echo (for bulbs and
plugs), and the “one-stop-shop” ability to manage a full range of
products (cameras, bulbs, plugs, power strips, wall plates) while
using the same app. And Geeni connects directly to your home wifi
network, no special hub or bridge required. You can try out one
bulb or outfit your entire home, making it much easier for you to
try out, rather than forcing you to buy a "starter pack" and get
stuck with a particular hub.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
There are so many interesting products coming out every day, but
also many things that make you ask yourself "what were they
thinking?". The most exciting part for us has been to listen to
our testers and customers to focus on the features and products
that really matter. Customers have been super excited about
things like Echo and Google Home support, accessible price
points, and an easy to use app that covers all devices. And these
are things people actually want to let into their homes: smart
bulbs, plugs (to control their appliances), security cameras,
surge protectors, etc. No smart Paperclips here :)
